DESCRIPTION
The CS-6000 series of Fast Set-On Local Oscillators
(FSLO) were designed as fast tracking local oscillators
(FTLO) to retrofit existing magnetron-based frequency
agile radars. Most magnetron based frequency agile
radars use either spin-tuned, step-tuned or sweep-
tuned magnetrons to achieve frequency agility. These
frequency agile magnetrons are programmed to fire at
random intervals to provide a random frequency carrier
for each transmitted pulses. When the transmitter is set
in the frequency agile mode, the radar receiver must
accurately tune to each new frequency for the duration
of the radar listening time to receive the return echos.
Therefore the receiver local oscillator must be able to
track the new frequency in less than 1 microsecond, and
must also meet performance criteria of good set-on
accuracy, low phase noise and low spurious output.
The CS-6910 FSLO was designed to replace both a Back-
ward Wave Oscillator (BWO) (in frequency agile mode)
and a Reflex Klystron ( in MTI mode) for the MK-92 fire
control radar. The BWO/Klystron design requires time
consuming and tedious alignment procedures that have
been known as the Achilles Heels of the MK-92 fire con-
trol system. CS-6910 is a simple replacement for the
BWO/Klystron combination that is self calibrating at the
unit level as well as the system level. CS-6910 was suc-
cessfully tested in sea trails during the first two months
of 1993, and is now being fitted to a large number of
Perry Class Frigates to improve MK-92's reliability and
readiness. The CS-6910 requires only a sample of the
magnetron’s RF output, an AC power source, and a
mode command input. All other system level related
functions are self contained within the CS-6910.
The CS-6000 FSLO series provide the “enabling tech-
nology” to inexpensively upgrade the large numbers of
existing magnetron-based radars, enabling these radars
to gain anti-jam capability with excellent target visibility
in a high clutter environment. A typical upgrade con-
sists of a frequency agile coaxial magnetron, which uses
a linear movement bellows for high MTBF (16,000
Hours), a CS-6000 series FSLO, and companion MTI sig-
nal processing software to make full utilization of the
MTI characteristics. This combination of capabilities
can rejuvenate older generation radars and enable them
to remain competitive in the evolving battle scene. As a
baseline comparison, a coaxial magnetron with FSLO
will provide about 8 to 10 dB better clutter rejection over
older spin tuned magnetron radars, and this perfor-
mance is vastly superior than fixed frequency magne-
tron radars .
