Therearethreemaintypesofsolarcellmaterial,eachwithitsownpropertiesthatmakeitunique.
Thefollowingcostandperformancetradeoffsshouldbeconsideredwhencomparingvarioussolar
cellmaterials:
Polycrystallinecellsarecommonlyfoundinoutdoorapplicationsandhaveaspectralsensitivityrange
of500nmto1100nm.They’reinthemediumpricerangeandtypicallyoffera13%powerconversion
efficiency.
Monocrystallinecells,suchastheIXOLARTMSolarBIT’sandSolarMD’s,haveaspectralsensitivityrange
from300nm(nearultraviolet)to1100nm(nearinfrared),whichincludesvisiblelight(400to700nm).
Duetothiswidespectralrange,theycanbeusedinbothindoorandoutdoorapplications.
Monocrystallineorsinglecrystallinematerialisthemostexpensivebutitdoesnotcontainimpurities,
andassuchthepowerconversionefficiencydoesnotdegradeoveroperatingtime.Thepower
conversionefficiencyofcommerciallyavailablemonocrystallinecellsrangesfrom15to22%.The
surfaceofthesecellsisahomogenousdarkblueordarkgrey.
Finally,amorphouscells,whichworkinthespectralrangeof300nmto600nm,areused
predominantlyindoorsinproductssuchassolarpoweredcalculatorssincetheyarenotsensitiveto
theupperlightspectrumandcannottakeadvantageofnaturalsunlight.Theyofferabout5%power
conversionefficiencyandaremostlyusedwithultralowpowerdeviceslikeclocksandelectronic
calculators.Amorphouscells,likepolycrystallinecells,sufferfromefficiencydegradation.

differentthantheelectricalutilitygridnetwork(ACenergy).
