In the 1980s, the Company designed and developed a series of metallized electrode pulsed capacitors for a variety of specialized fight duty applications. These units deliver an extremely high percentage of their stored energy, feature an energy density by weight of 0.77kJ/kg, and an energy density by volume of 0.9 to 1.2 MegaJoules per M2. In response to customer requirements for heavy duty pulsed capacitors that deliver kiloJoules of energy, Aerovox developed a larger size ver- sion of the KD/KL type capacitor: the KM type MetED capacitor. The growth of the technology, which has resulted in Aerovoxs KM type MetED citor, represents the best performing urvectric system at the lowest cost per joule available. The KM type is offered in the range of 8,000 to 35,000 volts, from 13 to 85 Kilo Joules, in the weight and volume energy den- CC5s1 sites noted above. KM designs are also available at lower voltages. upon request. A number of base sizes are available: Some of the more common sizes are shown in the table on the reverse side of this sheet. The height of the KM capacitors is varied, depen- ding on stored energy requirements. Low profile terminals are provided for all voitages in either a single or two terminal configuration. Capacitor life of KM type MetED capacitors is expressed as 5% loss of initial capacitance. Lifetime is highly predictable and controlled by design. Short life spans can be designed at high energy densities without running into the infantile failure mode problems that plague other dielectric systems. The inherent self- Clearing characteristic of this design allows the capacitor to withstand thousands of faults before the capacitor is considered to have failed. With a highly predictable life span and the absence of an infantile failure mode, planned preventive maintenance of large banks of these capacitors is achievable. Mfz, 195 Canyright Aerovox i7= KM type MetED capacitors are highly ef- ficient with dissipation factors in the range of 0.4%. In general, this type of capacitor can be considered a heat sink as opposed to a heat radiator when operating in a burst mode system. By design, the peak current output in the KM style capacitor is limited. However, Aerovoxs PM style capacitors are available for high current requirements. Aerovoxs Marketing Department can provide design data for your voltage reversal and current carrying requirements. Further research and design develop- ment is currently underway at Aerovox to achieve several times the energy den- sities offered in the KM type MetED capacitors.
