Lightweight Aluminium Connector
DATA SHEET
Amphenol’s Terrapin connector series is now available in a new
lightweight Aluminium option. Terrapin connectors have long
been used in military communications equipment so this new
extension to the product range is perfectly suited not only to
weight critical soldier system applications but also industrial
applications such as hand-held instrumentation.
The miniature size and footprint of the Terrapin connector series makes it a popular choice
for applications where space is at a premium i.e. hand-held devices and highly connectorised
equipment, however these applications are often also subject to strict weight restrictions.
The entire Terrapin product range is now available in this new lightweight Aluminium shell
material which is nished in the latest RoHS compliant, Cadmium Free, Black Zinc Nickel
plating nish. Typical weight savings are as much as 50% compared to the standard
Terrapin product which is made from Brass.
All popular performance features and high speci cations of the Terrapin product range
have been retained, i.e IP68 sealing in mated and unmated conditions, planforms with up
to 37-contacts, integral backshell for low cost overmoulding and of course the unique
mating mechanism which allows the same plug to mate with either break-away or locking
receptacles.
The new Lightweight Terrapin is fully intermateable and backwards compatible with original
Terrapin connectors.

Data Transmission
Amphenol’s T errapin connector series is widely used for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet transmission in harsh environments
where IP68 sealing, corrosion resistance and high vibration endurance are required. Rigorously tested at system level to
MIL-STD-810F, the properties of Terrapin connectors facilitate miniaturisation of equipment such as LAN switches, Net-centric devices
and IP-enabled computing devices. Suitable for both Military and Industrial applications, Amphenol’s Terrapin connectors are easily
terminated to both unscreened and screened commercial Cat 5, 5e and 6 Ethernet cables with an integral backshell for braid termination
giving 360o shielding.
