Description
The AT73C203 device provides an inte grated solu tion to portable and handheld appl i-
cations built a round m icropr ocess ors r equir ing “s mar t ” power m anage ment f uncti ons,
such as PDAs, Palmtop computers, point-of-sales terminals, 3G modems, etc.
Its compact package outline and small size of external components make the
AT73C203 suitable for PCMCIA card power management as well.
The AT73C20 3 i nte grates a power switch contr oller t hat, whe n connec te d t o a n exter-
nal power switch, may be used for automatically selecting one of four possible power
sources:
• Internal battery
• External battery
• Plugtop power supply unit 5V (PSU)
• PC Host USB supply
The power switch output (VDD-PSU line) is connected directly to external auxiliary
components such as a radio or any other “current hungry” module.
The AT73C203 is also equipped with four digital rails from VDD-PSU to supply a base-
band ch ip, a reset generat or for the bas eband chip, and a S PI in terface to con trol th e
AT73C203 via an inter nal r egister set. The USIM inte rface al lows the applic ation pro-
cessor to communicate with and control a USIM card. Charge control enables the
applic ation proces sor to charge the batter y from the PSU or USB. A state machin e
can al so dete r mine wheth er to charge the in tern al batt er y throu gh USB at sta r t-up.
Addit ionally, hardware mon itor ing gives informat ion to the appli catio n proces sor whe n
a voltage drop occurs (programmed via internal registers).
