Two Products Offer
Design Flexibility
As a manufacturer of two lines of
loadcenters, we are in a unique
position to offer the broadest range
of interiors in the market. Each line
has its own unique characteristics
that appeal to various segments of
the market. OEM interiors are UL
recognized components and are listed
in either of the following UL files:
E8741 or E52977.
The interiors are designed for either
horizontal (single-row breaker
mounting), or vertical (double-row
breaker mounting). To comply with
National Electrical Code® (NEC)
requirements if mounted horizontally,
when the breaker is ON, the handle
should be in the UP position. When
mounted vertically, the handle toggles
from left to right, so this is not a concern.
Type CH
The CH interiors feature 100% copper
bus and use the CH 3/4-inch wide
(19.1 mm) circuit breaker, which
minimizes panel space. Recognized
by contractors for its sturdy design,
the CH interior will appeal to those
customers seeking an industrial
quality bolted bus bar and the space
saving of 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) per bus
stab. With a typical 12 circuit CH
interior, this space savings amounts
to an 1-1/2 inch (38.1 mm) savings
over its 1-inch (25.4 mm) counterparts.
The stab rating of the CH interiors is
140 amperes maximum, meaning that
the handle rating of breakers mounted
across from one another may not
exceed 140 amperes.
Type BR
The BR interiors are manufactured of
formed, plated aluminum or copper,
and use the Cutler-Hammer Type BR
1-inch wide (25.4 mm) circuit breaker.
This design affords customers the
most circuit flexibility as many of
these interiors allow the installation
of standard 1- and 2-pole breakers
as well as duplex (2 poles in a 1-inch
space, 25.4 mm), or quadplex (4 poles
in a 2-inch space, 50.8 mm) breakers.
The stab rating of the BR interiors is
200 amperes maximum, meaning that
the handle rating of the breakers that
are mounted across from one another
may not exceed 200 amperes.

provide solid power distribution and

to-install package. Interiors are offered
from 2 to 42 circuits, and from 70 to
225 amperes.

Cutler-Hammer OEM interiors are as
easy to order as they are to install.
Customers place orders by catalog
number in multiples of the standard
package quantities. The products are
either stocked in Cutler-Hammer
warehouses or are shipped directly
from the plant. For those panels
shipping directly from the plant,
shipping lead time is 10 working days.

Specifications, Listings
Class CTL
NEC Paragraph 384-15 requires branch
circuit panelboards to be provided
with physical means to prevent the
installation of more overcurrent
devices than the number of which the
enclosure was designed, rated and
approved. Class CTL duplex, quadplex
and twin breakers (identified by a
catalog number prefix BD, BQ, BQC
and CHT) are equipped with a UL
listed rejection tab over the line
terminal. All OEM interiors have
appropriately notched stabs to accept
these rejection tab Class CTL breakers.
Duplex, quadplex and twin breakers
manufactured without the rejection
tab (identified by a catalog number
prefix BR, BRD and CHNT) are
available for replacement purposes
in older interiors.
Federal Specifications
All loadcenter enclosures meet
Federal Specifications W-P-115b,
Type 1, and Class 2 requirements.
All 120/240V breakers, both 1-inch
(25.4 mm), 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) and
3/4-inch (19.1 mm) per pole meet the
requirement of Federal Specifications
W-C 375B/Gen Type 1.

384-15
Lighting and Appliance Panelboards
Lighting and appliance branch circuit
panelboards are defined in NEC Article
384 as “One having more than 10% of
its overcurrent devices rated 30
amperes or less for which neutral
connections are provided.” Article 384
also limits the number of overcurrent
devices (branch circuit poles) to a
maximum of 42 in any one cabinet.
When the 42 poles are exceeded, two
or more separate panels are required.

CIRCUIT
BREAKERS
CH Circuit Breakers
Cutler-Hammer Type CH plug-on
breakers are a 3/4-inch (19.1 mm)
design with a UL listed 10 kA interrupt-
ing rating. CH breakers can be used as
main or branch disconnect devices.
Several ratings are SWD and HACR
approved. Typical ampacity range for
CH breakers is 15 to 150 amperes.
CH-GF People Protection Breakers
Cutler-Hammer Type CH-GF (ground
fault circuit breakers) combine state-
of-the-art electronic technology with
a circuit breaker mechanism in a
compact 3/4-inch (19.1 mm) package.
The CH-GF automatically senses hot
wire-to-ground faults in a 4 to 6 mA
range and disconnects the power, thus
providing an extra margin of safety
beyond that of conventional circuit
breakers. CH-GF applications include
bathrooms, cellar outlets, swimming
pools, outdoor branch circuits and
kitchen branch circuits. Available in UL
listed 120 and 120/240V ratings. Cutler-
Hammer also offers non-UL listed
ground fault breakers for international
applications as well as ground fault
devices for equipment protection.
CH-EPD Equipment Protection
Breakers
The Cutler-Hammer Type CH-EPD
device is similar to the CH-GP except
that it is designed to protect equip-
ment (not people) against damage
from arcing ground faults. It is
available with a 30 mA trip level.
Applications include infrared heating
equipment, process control equip-
ment, etc.
Special Application Breakers
As the name implies, these devices are
designed for special applications as re-
quired by the National Electrical Code.
Neutral Switching Breaker
Primary application for the Cutler-
Hammer switching neutral breaker is
for protection of process equipment
such as gas pumps that utilize
flammable liquids. Non-automatic
pole breaks the neutral power leg,
minimizing the danger of arc conditions.
2-Pole Breakers 120V or More to Ground
Used on Delta distribution systems,
these Type CH breakers are applied on
phase legs where voltage-to-ground is
above 120V.
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)
Reduce the risk of fire by detecting
and interrupting electrical arcing faults
which standard thermal magnetic
breakers cannot. For more informa-
tion, see page 9.
CH-HM Breakers
CH-HM breakers are designed with
high magnetic trip settings. Single-
and 2-pole CH-HM breakers (“HM”
suffix) rated 15 and 20 amperes are
recommended for circuits with
inherently high inrush currents.
CH-M50 Breakers
CH-M50 breakers are designed to
operate at a maximum temperature
of 50°C. Single- and 2-pole CH-M50
breakers (“M50” suffix) rated 15 to
50 amperes are recommended for
applications where the ambient
temperatures are above 40°C.
CHP Breakers
CHP breakers are designed with a
three-position commercial trip (on-
tripped-off). Single-, 2- and 3-pole
CHP breakers rated 10 to 70 amperes
are recommended for applications
requiring a breaker center trip position.

Two-pole Type CHGFIs are designed
for use in 3-wire, 120/240V AC circuits,
120V AC multiwire circuits employing
common, neutral and 2-wire, 240V AC
circuits obtained from a 120/240V AC
source.
Figure 5 and Figure 6 illustrate
typical wiring configurations for
120/240V AC multiwire circuits.
Figure 7 depicts a 240V AC, 2-wire
circuit. Note the “panel neutral”
conductor connects to the neutral bar,
even though the neutral is not included
in the load circuit. This connection is
necessary to supply a 120V AC power
source to the ground fault sensing
circuit.
The figures are shown with a 120/240V
AC, single-phase, 3-wire power source,
but are also applicable to a 120/208V AC,
3-phase, 4-wire power supply. For all
figures the electrical operation of the
Type CHGFI is not affected by the
equipment ground.

Single-pole Type CHP-GFI breakers are

CIRCUIT
BREAKERS
BR Circuit Breakers
Cutler-Hammer Type BR plug-on
breakers in the standard 1-inch
(25.4 mm) per pole package have
unique color-coded cases that indicate
UL listed 10 kA or 22 kA interrupting
ratings and can be used as main or
branch disconnect devices. All are type
I.C. (interchangeable) devices; several
ratings are SWD and HACR approved.
Typical ampacity range for BR
breakers is 15 to 150 amperes.
GFCB® People Protection Breakers
Cutler-Hammer Type GFCBs (ground
fault circuit breakers) combine state-of-
the-art electronic technology with a
circuit breaker mechanism in a
compact 1-inch (25.4 mm) per pole
package. The GFCB automatically
senses hot wire-to-ground faults in a
4 to 6 mA range and disconnects the
power, thus providing an extra margin
of safety beyond that of conventional
circuit breakers. GFCB applications
include bathrooms, cellar outlets,
swimming pools, outdoor branch
circuits and kitchen branch circuits.
Available in UL listed 120 and 120/240V
ratings. Cutler-Hammer also offers
non-UL listed GFCBs for international
applications as well as ground fault
devices for equipment protection.
GFEP Equipment Protection
Breakers
The Cutler-Hammer Type GFEP device is
similar to the GFCB, except that it is
designed to protect equipment (not
people) against damage from arcing
ground faults. It is available with a 30 mA
trip level. Applications include infrared
heating equipment, computer equip-
ment, process control equipment, etc.
BJ Circuit Breakers
Available in 125 through 200 ampere
frames, Cutler-Hammer Type BJ plug-
on breakers have 10 kA and 22 kA
interrupting ratings that can be used
as main or branch disconnect devices.
Large extruded aluminum box lugs,
complies with UL486B, provide cool
operation. Tripping mechanism has
thermal and magnetic protection for
long-life performance. Rupture gas is
safely vented into box gutter.
BD Circuit Breakers
BD plug-on breakers have the same
construction as Cutler-Hammer Type BR
1-inch (25.4 mm) per pole devices
except that two poles are in a space-
saving 1-inch (25.4 mm) package.
UL listed interrupting rating is 10 kA.
Some ratings are SWD and HACR
approved. Exclusive CTL rejection
feature allows only 42 circuits in the
panel in compliance with NEC Article
384-15.
BQ Circuit Breakers
Quadplex® construction of Cutler-
Hammer Type BQ plug-on breakers
incorporates two duplex breakers
assembled together to provide various
combinations of 2-pole and single-pole
devices in a 2-inch (50.8 mm) package,
and allows compliance with NEC Article
240-20(b). The 2-pole combinations of
Cutler-Hammer Type BQ breakers are
marked “independent trip” meaning
that each pole of a 2-pole device trips
independently of the other, but may be
actuated jointly by means of the handle
tie. Independent trip devices may only
be used on 3-wire Edison circuits where
the neutral is present.
BQC Circuit Breakers
Quadplex construction of Cutler-
Hammer Type BQC plug-on breakers
incorporates a special internal
common trip cam. BQC breakers are
available in several combinations of
2-pole and single-pole devices
wherein the 2-pole circuits have an
internal common trip mechanism.
These breakers are labeled “common
trip” and meet all the requirements of
UL489 paragraph 9.1 requiring
multipole breakers to have common
trip. Common trip breakers are
required on all 240V circuits where
there is no neutral present such as
water heaters, baseboard heat, air
conditioners and other motorloads.
Special Application Breakers
As the name implies, these devices are
designed for special applications as
required by the National Electrical Code®.
Water Heater Breaker
Some watthour meters incorporate
rate register switches used in conjunc-
tion with off-peak rates. Water heater
breakers do not derive their circuit
from the loadcenter stab. The line and
load side of the breaker are fed to
terminals on the breaker. Except for
these terminations, the device offers
normal circuit breaker protection.
Switching Neutral Breaker
Primary application for the Cutler-
Hammer switching neutral breaker is
for protection of process equipment
such as gas pumps that utilize flam-
mable liquids. Non-automatic pole
breaks the neutral power leg, minimiz-
ing the danger of arc conditions.
2-Pole Breakers 120V or More-to-Ground
Used on Delta distribution systems,
these Type BR breakers are applied on
phase legs where voltage-to-ground is
above 120V.
Non-Automatic Molded Case Switch
Identical to comparable circuit breaker
frames with this exception: non-
automatic molded case switches do not
have thermal or magnetic elements.
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)
Reduce the risk of fire by detecting
and interrupting electrical arcing faults
which standard thermal magnetic
breakers cannot. For more informa-

Special Application Plug-On Circuit Breakers
Ground Fault Application Notes
Single-pole GFCBs are designed
for use in 2-wire, 120V AC circuits.
Figure 16 shows a typical wiring
configuration.
Two-pole GFCBs are designed for
use in 3-wire, 120/240V AC circuits,
120V AC multiwire circuits employing
common, neutral and 2-wire, 240V AC
circuits obtained from a 120/240V AC
source.
Figures 17 and 18 illustrate typical wir-
ing configurations for 120/240V AC
multiwire circuits.
Figure 19 depicts a 240V AC, 2-wire
circuit. Note the “panel neutral”
conductor connects to the neutral
bar, even though the neutral is not
included in the load circuit. This
connection is necessary to supply a
120V AC power source to the ground
fault sensing circuit.
The figures are shown with a
120/240V AC, single-phase, 3-wire
power source, but are also applicable
to a 120/208V AC, 3-phase, 4-wire
power supply. For all figures, the
electrical operation of the GFCB is not
affected by the equipment ground.

CHSA Surge Protector
BRSURGE Surge Protector
CHSA — For use on single-phase,
120/240V AC systems. This easily
plugs into a single-phase Type CH
loadcenter and occupies two 3/4-inch
(19.1 mm) pole spaces similar to a
2-pole Type CH breaker. When plugged
into the first two stabs at the top of
the loadcenter just below the main
breaker or main lug, it provides surge
protection for the entire loadcenter. If
internal components are damaged, the
CHSA LED visual indicators will signal
the need for replacement. This device
is suitable for service entry locations
installed in accordance with NEC
Article 280. The CHSA is ideal for
protecting sensitive appliances and
electronics, such as refrigerators,
microwave ovens, and home
computers.
BRSURGE — For use on single-phase,
120/240V AC systems. This easily
plugs into a single-phase Type BR
loadcenter and occupies two 1-inch
(25.4 mm) pole spaces similar to a
2-pole Type BR breaker. When plugged
into the first two stabs at the top of
the loadcenter just below the main
breaker or main lug, it provides surge
protection for the entire loadcenter. If
internal components are damaged, the
BRSURGE LED visual indicators will
signal the need for replacement. This
device is suitable for service entry
locations installed in accordance with
NEC Article 280. The BRSURGE is ideal
for protecting sensitive appliances
and electronics, such as refrigerators,
microwave ovens, and home
computers.
CHSP (Cutler-Hammer
Surge Protector)
Primary Protection for Service Entrance
The best place to install surge protec-
tion is at the electrical entrance point.
The service entrance (loadcenter
or breaker panel) is often where AC
power, telephone lines and cable lines
are located. Applying a CHSP product
to your service entrance will reduce
a voltage surge to an acceptable level
for appliances and surge strips. For
added protection, it is recommended
that you install surge protection for
your cable and telephone lines (see
accessories) at the service entrance.
The benefit of installing these prod-
ucts is that your AC, cable and tele-
phone lines will all have the same
ground potential, in one common
location, for passing the surge
away from your equipment.
