LM137QML 3-Terminal Adjustable Negative Regulators General Description Features The LM137 are adjustable 3-terminal negative voltage regulators capable of supplying in excess of -1.5A over an output voltage range of -37V to -1.2V. These regulators are exceptionally easy to apply, requiring only 2 external resistors to set the output voltage and 1 output capacitor for frequency compensation. The circuit design has been optimized for excellent regulation and low thermal transients. Further, the LM137 series features internal current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area compensation, making them virtually blowout-proof against overloads. The LM137 serve a wide variety of applications including local on-card regulation, programmable-output voltage regulation or precision current regulation. The LM137 are ideal complements to the LM117 adjustable positive regulators. Output voltage adjustable from -37V to -1.2V 1.5A output current guaranteed, -55C to +150C Line regulation typically 0.01%/V Load regulation typically 0.3% Excellent thermal regulation, 0.002%/W 77 dB ripple rejection Excellent rejection of thermal transients 50 ppm/C temperature coefficient Temperature-independent current limit Internal thermal overload protection Standard 3-lead transistor package Output is short circuit protected LM137 Series Packages and Power Capability Device Package Rated Power Dissipation Design Load Current LM137 TO-3 (K) TO-39 (H) 20W 2W 1.5A 0.5A Ordering Information NS Part Number SMD Part Number NS Package Number Package Description LM137K/883 K02C 2LD Low Profile T0-3 Metal Can LM137H/883 H03A 3LD T0-39 Metal Can LM137HPQMLV 5962P9951701VXA 30k rd(Si) H03A 3LD T0-39 Metal Can LM137H1PQMLV 5962P9951708VXA 30k rd(Si) H03A 3LD T0-39 Metal Can LM137H MD8 (Note 1) Bare Die LM137KG MD8 (Note 1) Bare Die Note 1: FOR ADDITIONAL DIE INFORMATION, PLEASE VISIT THE HI REL WEB SITE AT: www.national.com/analog/space/level_die (c) 2012 Texas Instruments Incorporated 201224 SNVS313B www.ti.com LM137QML 3-Terminal Adjustable Negative Regulators March 21, 2012 LM137QML Connection Diagrams TO-3 Metal Can Package TO-39 Metal Can Package 20122406 Case Is Input Bottom View See NS Package Number H03A 20122405 Case is Input Bottom View See NS Package Number K02C Typical Applications Adjustable Negative Voltage Regulator 20122401 Full output current not available at high input-output voltages C1 = 1 F solid tantalum or 10 F aluminum electrolytic required for stability *C2 = 1 F solid tantalum is required only if regulator is more than 4 from power-supply filter capacitor Output capacitors in the range of 1 F to 1000 F of aluminum or tantalum electrolytic are commonly used to provide improved output impedance and rejection of transients www.ti.com 2 LM137QML Absolute Maximum Ratings (Note 2) Power Dissipation (Note 3) Input-Output Voltage Differential Operating Ambient Temperature Range Internally Limited 40V -55C TA +125C -55C TJ +150C Operating Junction Temperature Range -65C TA +150C 150C 300C -41.25V Storage Temperature Maximum Junction Temperature Lead Temperature (Soldering, 10 sec.) Operating Ratings indicate conditions for which the device is functional, but do not guarantee specific performance limits. For guaranteed specifications and test conditions, see the Electrical Characteristics. The guaranteed specifications apply only for the test conditions listed. Some performance characteristics may degrade when the device is not operated under the listed test conditions. Note 3: The maximum power dissipation must be derated at elevated temperatures and is dictated by TJmax (maximum junction temperature), JA (package junction to ambient thermal resistance), and TA (ambient temperature). The maximum allowable power dissipation at any temperature is PDmax = (TJmax - TA)/ JA or the number given in the Absolute Maximum Ratings, whichever is lower. Note 14: Pre and post irradiation limits are identical to those listed under AC and DC electrical characteristics except as listed in the Post Radiation Limits Table. These parts may be dose rate sensitive in a space environment and demonstrate enhanced low dose rate effect. Radiation end point limits for the noted parameters are guaranteed only for the conditions as specified in Mil-Std-883, Method 1019.5, Condition A. Schematic Diagram 20122402 www.ti.com 8 When power is dissipated in an IC, a temperature gradient occurs across the IC chip affecting the individual IC circuit components. With an IC regulator, this gradient can be especially severe since power dissipation is large. Thermal regulation is the effect of these temperature gradients on output voltage (in percentage output change) per Watt of power 20122403 LM137, VOUT = -10V VIN - VOUT = -40V IIL = 0A 0.25A 0A Vertical sensitivity, 5 mV/div FIGURE 1. In Figure 1, a typical LM137's output drifts only 3 mV (or 0.03% of VOUT = -10V) when a 10W pulse is applied for 10 ms. This performance is thus well inside the specification limit of 0.02%/W x 10W = 0.2% max. When the 10W pulse is ended, the thermal regulation again shows a 3 mV step as the LM137 chip cools off. Note that the load regulation error of about 8 mV (0.08%) is additional to the thermal regulation error. In Figure 2, when the 10W pulse is applied for 100 ms, the output drifts only slightly beyond the drift in the first 10 ms, and the thermal error stays well within 0.1% (10 mV). 20122404 LM137, VOUT = -10V VIN - VOUT = -40V IL = 0A 0.25A 0A Horizontal sensitivity, 20 ms/div FIGURE 2. 9 www.ti.com LM137QML change in a specified time. Thermal regulation error is independent of electrical regulation or temperature coefficient, and occurs within 5 ms to 50 ms after a change in power dissipation. Thermal regulation depends on IC layout as well as electrical design. The thermal regulation of a voltage regulator is defined as the percentage change of VOUT, per Watt, within the first 10 ms after a step of power is applied. The LM137's specification is 0.02%/W, max.
