10 Steps to Better Audio10 Steps to Better Audio
10 Steps to Better Audio10 Steps to Better Audio
10 Steps to Better Audio
1 Look (and Listen)
beyond the numbers.
SNR, THD+N and sample rate provide a reasonable start
when selecting components to power your design. However
great audio is not about numbers on a sheet of paper, it is
about sound quality and listening experience. Listen to any
AKM DAC, codec or ADC and we’ll bet that you’ll love our
sound over the sound of competing products!
3 Good sound is a system,
not a component. Look at
ALL of the costs.
Some audio converters have low jitter tolerance, requiring extra
money spent in clock circuits to maintain performance. AKM has
some of the best jitter
tolerance in the
business, so consistent,
great performance is
assured.
Competing parts
require more complex
filters or conversion
from a current output
to a voltage output.
AKM DACs are voltage
output devices,
simplifying
external circuitry.
AKM’s superior out-
of-band noise
performance
eliminates complex
multi-pole filters,
relying instead on
simple one or two-
pole designs.
2 Good PCB layout is
crucial to great audio.
The high-frequency clocks used in digital systems (CPU/system
clocks, memory clocks, etc.) can cause problems in the analog
audio domain. Separate ground and power planes, short power
traces and judicious routing of clock signals all play a part in
getting the best performance from your design. If you have any
questions, AKM Application Engineers are happy to review
your design and help you find problem areas. Here are a few
pointers to help you get started with AKM audio:
î™– Isolate the analog and digital ground planes.
î™– Place small bypass capacitors as close to the chip as
possible
î™– Do not place inductors in the power supply lines, as
these restrict the flow of current to the chip and can
reduce performance.
4 Group Delay Deviation: It’s
a Phase Issue.
Group delay deviation relates to how a chip’s architecture affects
signals that travel through it. Group delay deviation comes from
using less-expensive IIR filters on the inputs and outputs of the ADC
or DAC’s internal architecture. These filters cause frequency
dependent time/phase shifts. This means that a 1 KHz sine wave will
go through the device faster than a 5KHz signal, resulting in a phase
shift between these signals.
In multichannel audio, the phase relationship of different frequen-
cies is crucial in providing spatial cues. AKM DACs and A/D convert-
ers use phase-accurate FIR filters. This means that they respond
predictably and accurately, regardless of input frequency or sample
rate. The end result is better sound, better imaging and superior
performance.
Page 5
and Analog Worlds
8 Does your ADC
go to 11?
Well, ours do (sort of). You see, when you saturate the inputs on
any of our A/D converters, the digital output is “pegged” at
maximum value, no mater how much you exceed the input
maximums. Some parts “wrap around” to negative full-scale
(ouch!) and begin re-incrementing. This forces a system designer
to have to compensate for this wrap around either with an
expensive input circuit or through DSP/CPU programming. AKM’s
approach is simple, valid and predicable in its behavior.)
6 Look past 20KHz
response when
evaluating sample rates.
What’s the point of supporting high sample rates if you are only
looking at energy from 20Hz to 20KHz. Instruments like cymbals
and horns have harmonic content well past 20KHz. When you test
audio parts at high sample rates, get rid of AES17 and A-weighted
filters and see what is now happening “in-band”. The lack of noise
in this extended audio band will provide a complete picture of
AKM’s audio excellence!
7 Watch Your Power
Supply.
Noise is a performance killer. Make sure that your power supply is
clean and strong. This will improve audio performance through-
out your system. If possible, use high-quality dedicated regulators
with low ESR (converters need fast access to current) and high
PSRR (Power Supply Rejection Ratio). Your ears will be happier if
you do, and your product’s performance will be at its best.
5 Consistent performance
across all sample
rates.
Filters should scale with sampling frequency. Period. If you are
using low sample rates, like 8KHz or 16KHz, non-scaling filters
place extra noise in the audio spectrum. This reduces performance
or requires the designer to switch between external filters. All
AKM DACs and ADCs feature switched-capacitor technology,
allowing the on-chip analog filters to scale with sample rate. This
reduces external circuitry and ensures superior sound.
A 16K sine wave was sent to the device under test using an Audio Precision System 2
Cascade. The digital output of the board was connected to an AES digital input on a
PC sound card. For five minutes, the AES digital input was recorded using CoolEdit
Pr o. After the data was collected, a digital FFT filter or digital notch filter at 16kHz
was applied. The resultant spikes in the graph show non-linearity or sparkle codes
caused by the errant data.
9 Silence is golden,
get rid of the noise.
Spurious noises. Sparkle codes. Spikes. Non-linearity. Periodic
aberattions. Call it what you will. Whether a converter is
converting or not, unwanted tones are unacceptable. With AKM,
the only time you’ll see (or hear) these objectionable signals is,
well, never. Instead you’ll see a truly random noise floor without
specific tones or spikes. This is the result of superior technology
and careful design. With AKM, you’ll crank up the signal and cut
out the noise.
Use AKM for all of
your audio designs.
D/A converters. A/D converters. S/PDIF. Codecs. AES-EBU.
Sample-rate converters. Class D amplifiers. Performance. Value.
When it comes to audio, make AKM your first stop. No one offers
the breadth of products, the integration, or the support that AKM
offers.

At AKM we’re proud of our
performance. Our perfor-
mance improves your
products and makes your
designs stand out from the
crowd. The graph on the
bottom of this page
illustrates the AK5394A’s
incredibly low noise floor. A
500 nanovolt signal (that’s
0.0000005 volts) is fed into
our ADC. You can see the
1KHz signal in the graph,
along with the average noise
floor under -150dB across
the entire audio spec-
trum! This stellar perfor-
mance is why you’ll find
AKM’s in many of the world’s
leading recording studios.

Spotlight -
ADC Filters
Now that high-fidelity
sample rates have risen to
192KHz, the internal filters
in analog-to-digital convert-
ers have become much more
complicated. There are two
opinions surrounding the
new 100KHz of passband;
one attempts to record as
much information in this
passband as possible, the
other is to care about
frequencies from 20Hz-
20KHz. AKM filters allow
you to have a flat noise floor
to Fs/2 even when sampling
at 192KHz. The images on
the left illustrate AKM’s
scaling filter versus a part
that fails to scale properly.
AKM gets rid of the noise
and delivers the best sound
along with the widest
bandwidth. Always!

EDF
AKM’s DACs feature the
industry’s best integrated
digital filter. This Extraordi-
nary Digital Filter, or EDFTM,
is the result of years of
experience in both electrical
and process engineering.
This filter, combined with
AKM’s superior noise-
shaping techniques, results
in DACs that outperform the
competition by a wide
margin. The plot on the left
shows the difference
between an “ordinary” DAC
(green plot) and AKM’s
Extraordinary Digital Filter
DAC (yellow plot). The out of
band noise and overall noise
floor is significantly reduced
by the EDF. The Extraordi-
nary Digital Filter is found
on many AKM high-
performance DACs.
Applications
Spotlight -
DSD and
PCM
Two leading high-resolution
audio formats are 192KHz
PCM and Direct-Stream
Digital, or DSD (Super Audio
CD). There are advantages
and disadvantages to both
approaches, which forces
some designers to make a
difficult choice. With AKM,
however, the choice is easy.
Our AK4357, AK4358 and
AK4383 support both
formats in a single chip. The
savvy engineer can use
these devices to create true
“universal” disc players.

2-volt RMS
AKM has several unique
silicon processing technolo-
gies. One process enables us
to create DACs with 2-volt
RMS output levels for
consumer electronics
compatibility. The diagram
on the left shows an AKM
integrated DAC in a SCART
television environment.
Take note: no output filters
or buffers. This “Direct-to-
jack” technology is an AKM
advantage, and greatly
simplifies a designers job.

Integration &
Portability
Integrated PLLs, preamplifi-
ers, headphone and speaker
amplifiers are found in many
AKM DACs, codecs and A/D
converters. A finely tuned
process enables us to build
the best analog gain stages,
which are then integrated
into ADCs, and CODECs. This
reduces design time and cost
while providing outstanding
sound. In fact, our AK5365
has the highest performing
IPGA (integrated program-
mable gain amplifier) in the
industry, while our AK4702
was the first DAC with a true
2-volt RMS output.

ALC
Automatic Level Control
(ALC) is found on many AKM
codecs and ADCs. The ALC is
located between the analog
mic preamp and the ADC
and maintains the incoming
signal at a constant level.
AKM’s ALC provides control
of Level, Time, Step and
Attenuation. Level is a
threshold value above which
the ALC is initiated. Time is
the amount of time that a
signal must spend above the
threshold before ALC starts.
Step allows you to instanta-
neously “step” the clipped
value down by the Attenua-
tion value or to wait until a
zero-crossing point is
reached prior to making ALC
adjustments. Attenuation
allows you to attenuate on a
per-sample basis until the
signal level is reduced below
the Threshold.

Smart Unlock
Many AKM S/PDIF Receivers
and Transceivers have two
features that make a
designer’s life and a
consumer’s experience
much better. Our Smart
Unlock Mode allows the chip
to continue running even if
lock is lost. When clock lock
is lost, AKM parts will revert
to the system crystal
(reference clock) . The built-
in dividers generate all
audio clocks, eliminating
external circuitry. AKM’s
Smart Filter mode handles
emphasis of S/PDIF signals.
If the AKM chip receives
emphasized audio formats, it
will correct this format prior
to retransmission.

TDM: mucho
audio, 1-wire
As more and more audio
channels are required,
transferring these channels
to and from DSPs and
microcontrollers becomes a
major challenge. AKM has
chosen to support TDM
modes on many of its
multichannel DACs, ADCs
and codecs. TDM enables up
to 8 stereo streams to pass
over a single wire. This saves
DSP pins, simplifies routing
and makes an engineer’s job
much easier. AKM parts that
include TDM are the AK5384
ADC, several DACs (AK4355,
4356, 4357, 4358), and
codecs (4529, 4586, 4588,
4589, 4626, 4628).
The AK5384 supports standard TDM and daisy-chain TDM (shown
below), allowing up to 8-channels of audio over a single wire.

Converters
Sample rate converters are a
must in today’s digital audio
world. They simplify the
mixing of audio streams of
different sample rates and
provide a compatibility
bridge between audio
formats (44.1KHz to 48Khz,
44.1KHz to 96KHz, etc.).
Chips like the AK4120 and
AK4121 are perfect for
closed systems where digital
audio is coming from CD or
DVD, while the AK4122, with
its built-in S/PDIF receiver
facilitates easy interfacing to
the outside world.

Architecture
All AKM DSPs have a
pipeline core architecture
that gives this product
family its excellent audio
processing capabilities. The
pipeline (shown in red)
consists of a 24-bit x 16-bit
multiplier, 1- to 15-bit shift
control and a 34-bit ALU.
This pipeline allows
simultaneous multiply,
shifts, and ALU functions in
a single line of code. This
same line of code can also
control the coefficient, data
and delay pointers, can shift
data onto the bus, and store
the bus data in a memory
location or output port. This
single-line functionality
allows significant audio
processing using a relatively
low DSP master clock speed.

Digital Power Amplifier Technology
Class-D
Input signal: -80dBFS Triangle waveform
...Lower Distortion, Better
Resolution
The images below clearly show the benefits of AKM’s Class D
amplifier technology. When a low-level signal is applied,
ordinary Class D approaches are forced to render the signal
using one of two voltage levels. AKM’s approach utilizes
intermediate voltage levels and Adaptive Dead-Time Control
for modulation. The result is increased resolution, lower
signal distortion.

Out-Of-Band Noise
Out of band noise generated by Class D amplifier’s can cause
problems during EMI testing (FCC, CE, etc.). AKM’s Class D
technology significantly reduces out of band noise. In doing
this, amplifiers based on the AK4730 can truly support 192KHz
sample rates and the extended frequency response that these
sample rates provide.
Class D amplifiers use pulse-width modulation (PWM) to generate the energy to drive external loudspeakers. Since PWM is a digital
technology, it is possible to have a pure digital signal path from source (CD, DVD) to speaker. The image on the left shows how an
analog sine wave is represented using PWM techniques. Most Class D technologies result in unacceptable THD+N (distortion) due to
the limitations of PWM. AKM has developed a technique that improves both the dynamic range the THD+N in digital amplifiers.
AKM’s Class D Technology offers Class AB performance with Class D efficiency. The input to an AKM Class D Amplifier is digital, not
analog. Unlike other solutions that use two voltage levels for modulation, AKM’s Class D products utilize multi-reference E-Bridge
technology to represent the signal that is transmitted to the speaker. This ability to use this intermediate voltage level to interpolate
the input signal results in improved dynamic range with less distortion. It sounds better and has fewer EMI issues than other offerings.

DACs+EEPROMs
In addition to making great audio DACs, AKM also makes DACs with integrated EEPROMs and stand-alone EEPROMs. These products
can be used as programmable voltage sources, taking the place of on-board trim pots and adding the ability to field update their values.
The DACs are very small and accurate. Thanks to the EEPROM, they retain their values even after power is removed from the circuit.

A Corporation Focused on the Information &
Communications Societies.
Since its establishment in 1983, Asahi Kasei Microsystems’ mission has been to focus on development in
two fast-growing areas of information and communication systems: custom and application-specific
LSIs. It has developed a niche in the industry by developing mixed-signal CMOS-based circuits that were
generally considered impossible to implement in CMOS form. This has significantly reduced the cost of
these ICs and ushered in a rapid growth of new cost effective applications.
The mission to develop leading edge mixed-signal CMOS ICs has led AKM to create world class design
and process technologies for high quality, low power consumption products for communications and
multimedia applications. AKM offers a range of products that includes analog-digital mixed circuit ICs
for mobile communications equipment, A/D and D/A converters based on Delta Sigma self-calibration
technology, and mass storage ICs incorporating lossless compression and error correction technology.
The underlying corporate tenet at AKM is the development of technology, production, and products
conducive to the human well being and to the creation of an environment of life and livelihood of true
value. As a vital, energetic corporation, driven by the constant development of technology and its
application to the growth of the information-communications society, AKM will continue to meet the
rising expectations of its customers and their end users.
