Description:
The MCP1703 is a family of CMOS low dropout (LDO)
voltage regulators that can deliver up to 250 mA of
current while consuming only 2.0 µA of quiescent
current (ty pi ca l). T he i npu t op era t in g ran ge is sp eci fie d
from 2.7V to 16.0 V, maki ng i t an ide al c hoi ce for two to
six primary cell battery-powered applications, 9V
alkaline and one or two cell Li-Ion-powered
applications.
The MCP1703 is capable of delivering 250 mA with
only 625 mV (typical) of input to output voltage
diff erential (VOUT = 2.8V). Th e output volt age toleranc e
of the MCP1703 is typically ±0.4% at +25°C and ±3%
maximum over the operating junction temperature
range of -40°C to +125°C. Line regulation is ±0.1%
typical at +25°C.
Output voltages ava ilab le fo r t he MCP1 703 r ang e from
1.2V to 5.5V. The LDO output is stable when using only
1 µF of output capacitance. Ceramic, tantalum, or
aluminum electrolytic capacitors can all be used for
input and output. Overcurrent limit and overtemperature
shutdown provid e a robust solutio n for any appl ication.
Package options include the SOT-223-3, SOT-23A,
2x3 DFN-8, and SOT-89-3.

L = 1.0 mA to 250 mA for VR >= 2.5V

VIN = 3.65V, Note 4
Note 1: The minimum VIN must meet two conditions: VIN2.7V and VIN (VOUT(MAX) + VDROPOUT(MAX)).
2: VR is the nominal regulator output voltage. For example: VR = 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 2.8V, 3.0V, 3.3V, 4.0V, or 5.0V.
The input voltage VIN = VOUT(MAX) + VDROPOUT(MAX) or ViIN = 2.7V (whichever is greater); IOUT = 100 µA.
3: TCVOUT = (VOUT-HIGH - VOUT-LOW) *106 / (V R * ΔTemperature), VOUT-HIGH = highest voltage measured over the
temperature range. VOUT-LOW = lowest voltage measured over the temperature range.
4: Load regulation is measured at a constant junction temperature using low duty cycle pulse testing. Changes in output
voltage due to heating effects are determined using thermal regulation specification TCVOUT.
5: Dropout voltage is defined as the input to output differential at which the output voltage drops 2% below its measured
value with an applied input voltage of VOUT(MAX) + VDROPOUT(MAX) or 2.7V, whichever is greater.
6: The maximum allowable power dissipation is a function of ambient temperature, the maximum allowable junction
temperature and the thermal resistance from junction to air (i.e., TA, TJ, θJA). Exceeding the maximum allowable power
dissipation will cause the device operating junction temperature to exceed the maximum 150°C rating. Sustained
junction temperatures above 150°C can impact the device reliability.
7: The junction temperature is approximated by soaking the device under test at an ambient temperature equal to the
desired junction temperature. The test time is small enough such that the rise in the junction temperature over the
ambient temperature is not significant.

3.0 PIN DESCRIPTIONS
The descriptions of the pins are listed in Table 3-1.
TABLE 3-1: MCP1703 PIN FUNCTION TABLE
3.1 Ground Terminal (GND)
Regulator ground. Tie GND to the negative side of the
output and the negative side of the input capacitor.
Only the LDO bias current (2.0 µA typical) flows out of
this pin; there is no high current. The LDO output
regulation is referenced to this pin. Minimize voltage
drops between this pin and the negative side of the
load.
3.2 Regulated Output Voltage (VOUT)
Connect VOUT t o the po sitive s ide of th e load an d the
positive terminal of the output capacitor. The positive
side of the output capacitor should be physically
located as close to the LDO VOUT pin as is practical.
The current flowing out of this pin is equal to the DC
load current.
3.3 Unregulated Input Voltage (VIN)
Connect VIN to the input unregulated source voltage.
Like all low dropout linear regulators, low source
impedance is necessary for the stable operation of the
LDO. The amount of capacitance required to ensure
low source impedance will depend on the proximity of
the input source capacitors or battery type. For most
applications, 1 µF of capacitance will ensure stable
operatio n of the LDO circuit. For app licat ions tha t have
load currents below 100 mA, the input capacitance
requirement can be lowered. The type of capacitor
used can be ceramic, tantalum, or aluminum
electrol ytic. Th e low ESR characteris tics of the cera mic
will yield better noise and PSRR performance at
high-frequency.
3.4 Exposed Thermal Pad (EP)
There is an internal electrical connection between the
Exposed Thermal Pad (EP) and th e VSS pi n; they must
be connected to the same potential on the Printed
Circuit Board (PCB).

4.0 DETAILED DESCRIPTION
4.1 Output Regulation
A portion of the LDO output voltage is fed back to the
internal error amplifier a nd compar ed with the preci sion
internal band gap reference. The error amplifier output
will adjust the amount of current that flows through the
P-Channel pass transistor, thus regulating the output
voltage to the desired value. Any changes in input
voltage or output current will cause the error amplifier
to respond and adjust the output voltage to the target
voltage (refer to Figure 4-1).
4.2 Overcurrent
The MCP17 03 interna l circui try mo nitors the am ount of
current flowing through the P-Channel pass transistor.
In the event of a short-circuit or excessive output
current, the MCP1703 will turn off the P-Channel
device for a short period, after which the LDO will
attempt to res tart . If the excessiv e current remains, the
cycle will repea t itself.
4.3 Overtemperature
The internal power dissipation within the LDO is a
function of input-to-output voltage differential and load
current. If the power dissipation within the LDO is
excessive, the internal junction temperature will rise
above the ty pic al shutdown thres hold of 150°C. At that
point, the LDO will shut down and begin to cool to the
typical turn-on junction temperature of 130°C. If the
power dissipation is low enough, the device will
continue to cool and operate normally. If the power
dissipation remains high, the thermal shutdown
protection circuitry will again turn off the LDO,
protecting it from catastrophic failure.

5.0 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The MCP1703 CMOS low dropout linear regulator is
intended for applications that need the lowest current
consumption while maintaining output voltage
regulation. The operating continuous load range of the
MCP1703 is from 0 mA to 250 mA (VR 2.5V). The
input operating voltage range is from 2.7V to 16.0V,
making it capable of operating from two or more
alkaline c ells or s ingle and multiple Li-Ion cel l batteries .
5.1 Input
The input of the MCP1703 is connected to the source
of the P-Channel PMOS pass transistor. As with all
LDO circuits, a relatively low source impedance (10Ω)
is need ed to pr event the i nput imp edance fro m causing
the LDO to become unstable. The size and type of the
capacitor needed depends heavily on the input source
type (battery, power supply) and the output current
range of the application. For most applications (up to
100 mA), a 1 µF ceramic capacitor will be sufficient to
ensure circuit stability. Larger values can be used to
improve circuit AC performance.
5.2 Output
The maximum rated continuous output current for the
MCP1703 is 250 mA (VR 2.5V). For applications
where VR < 2.5V, the maximum output current is
200 mA.
A minimum output cap acit ance of 1.0 µF is required for
small signal stability in applications that have up to
250 mA output current capability. The capacitor type
can be ceramic, ta ntalum, or aluminum electrolytic. The
Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) range on the
output capacitor can range from 0Ω to 2.0Ω.
The output capacitor range for ceramic capacitors is
1 µF to 22 µF. Higher output capacitance values may
be used for tantalum and electrolytic capacitors. Higher
output capacitor values pull the pole of the LDO
transfer function inward that results in higher phase
shif ts which in turn cause a low e r cro ss over fre quency.
The circuit designer should verify the stability by
applying line step and load step testing to their system
when using capacitance values greater than 22 µF.
5.3 Output Rise Time
When powering up the internal reference output, the
typical output rise time of 1000 µs is controlled to
preve nt ove rshoot of the output voltage.

6.0 APPLICATION CIRCUITS &
ISSUES
6.1 Typical Application
The MCP1703 is most commonly used as a voltage
regulator. Its low quiescent current and low dropout
voltage make it ideal for many battery-powered
applications.
FIGURE 6-1: Typical Applicat io n Circuit.
6.1.1 APPLICATION INPUT CONDITIONS
6.2 Power Calculations
6.2.1 POWER DISSIPATIO N
The internal power dissipation of the MCP1703 is a
function of input voltage, output voltage and output
current. The power dissipation, as a result of the
quiescent current draw, is so low, it is insignificant
(2.0 µA x VIN). The following equation can be used to
calculate the internal power dissipation of the LDO.
EQUATION 6-1:
The maximum continuous operating junction
temperature specified for the MCP1703 is +125°C. To
estimate the internal junction temperature of the
MCP1703, the total internal power dissipation is
multiplied by the thermal resistance from junction to
ambient (RθJA). The thermal resistance from junction to
ambient for the SOT-23A pin package is estimated at
336°C/W.
EQUATION 6-2:
The maximum power dissipation capability for a
package can be calculated given the junction-to-
ambient thermal resistance and the maximum ambient
temperat ure for the app licat ion. The foll owing equa tion
can be used to determine the package maximum
internal power dissipation.

6.3 Voltage Regulator
Internal power dissipation, junction temperature rise,
junction temperature and maximum power dissipation
are calculated in the following example. The power
dissipation, as a result of ground current, is small
enough to be neglected.
6.3.1 POWER DISSIPATIO N EXAMP LE
Device Junction Temperature Rise
The internal junction temperature rise is a function of
internal power dissipation and the thermal resistance
from junction to ambient for the application. The
thermal resistance from junction to ambient (RθJA) is
derived from an EIA/JEDEC standard for measuring
thermal resistance for small surface mount packages.
The EIA/JEDEC specification is JESD51-7, “High
Effective Thermal Conductivity Test Board for Leaded
Surface M ount Pac kages”. The st anda rd desc ribes th e
test method and board specifications for measuring the
thermal resist ance fro m junction to ambie nt. The actua l
thermal resistance for a particular application can vary
depending on many factors, such as copper area and
thickness. Refer to AN792, “A Method to Determine
How Much Power a SOT23 Can Dissipate in an
Application”, (DS00792), for more information
regarding this subject.
Junction Temperature Estimate
To estimate the internal junction temperature, the
calculated temperature rise is added to the ambient or
offset temperature. For this example, the worst-case
junction temperature is estimated below.
Maximum Package Power Dissipation at +40°C
Ambient Temperature Assuming Minimal Copper
Usage.
6.4 Voltage Reference
The MCP1 703 can be used n ot only as a reg ula tor, but
also as a low quiescent current voltage reference. In
many microcontroller applications, the initial accuracy
of the referen ce can be calibrated using productio n test
equipm ent o r by us ing a ratio measu rem ent . Whe n th e
initial accuracy is calibrated, the thermal stability and
line regulation tolerance are the only errors introduced
by the MCP1703 LDO. The low-cost, low quiescent
current and small ceramic output capacitor are all
advantages when using the MCP1703 as a voltage
reference.

6.5 Pulsed Load Applications
For some applications, there are pulsed load current
events that may exceed the specified 250 mA
maximum specification of the MCP1703. The internal
current limit of the MCP1703 will prevent high peak
load demands from causing non-recoverable damage.
The 250 mA rating is a maximum average continuous
rating. As long as th e ave rage c urrent d oes not excee d
250 mA, pulsed higher load currents can be applied to
the MCP1703. The typical current limit for the
MCP1703 is 500 mA (TA +25°C).

Note the following details of the code protection feature on Microchip devices:
Microchip products meet the specification contained in their particular Microchip Data Sheet.
Microchip believes that its family of products is one of the most secure families of its kind on t he market today, when used in the
intended manner and under normal conditions.
There are dishonest and possibly illegal methods used to breach the code protection feature. All of these methods, to our
knowledge, require using the Microchip products in a manner outside the operating specifications contained in Microchip’s Data
Sheets. Most likely, the person doing so is engaged in theft of intellectual property.
Microchip is willing to work with the customer who is concerned about the integrity of their code.
Neither Microchip nor any other semiconductor manufacturer can guarantee the security of their code. Code protection does not
mean that we are guaranteeing the product as “unbreakable.
Code protection is c onstantly evolving. We a t Microc hip are co m mitted to continuously improving the code prot ect ion featur es of our
products. Attempts to break Microchip’ s code protection feature may be a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If such acts
allow unauthorized access to your software or other copyrighted work, you may have a right to sue for relief under that Act.
Microchip received ISO/TS-16949:2002 certification for its worldwide
headquarters, design and wafer fabrication facilities in Chandler and
Tempe, Arizona; Gresham, Oregon and design centers in California
and India. The Company’s quality system processes and procedures
are for its PIC® MCUs and dsPIC® DSCs, KEELOQ® code hopping
devices, Serial EEPROMs, microperiph erals, nonvolatile memory and
analog products. In addition, Microchip’s quality system for the design
and manufacture of development systems is ISO 9001:2000 certified.
