These modules provide a precisely regulated output voltage programmable via an external resistor from 0.75Vdc to 5.0Vdc over a wide range of input voltage (VIN = 8.3 - 14Vdc). Austin SuperLynxTM II has a sequencing feature, EZ-SEQUENCETM that enable designers to implement various types of output voltage sequencing when powering multiple modules on board. An input line fuse must always be used. This power module can be used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from simple standalone operation to being part of a complex power architecture. To preserve maximum flexibility, internal fusing is not included, however, to achieve maximum safety and system protection, always use an input line fuse. The safety agencies require a fastacting fuse with a maximum rating of 15 A (see Safety Considerations section). Based on the information provided in this data sheet on inrush energy and maximum dc input current, the same type of fuse with a lower rating can be used. A highly inductive source can affect the stability of the module. An input capacitance must be placed directly adjacent to the input pin of the module, to minimize input ripple voltage and ensure module stability. COPPER STRIP V O (+) RESISTIVE LOAD 1uF . 10uF In a typical application, 6x47 F low-ESR tantalum capacitors (AVX part #: TPSE476M025R0100, 47F 25V 100 m ESR tantalum capacitor) will be sufficient to provide adequate ripple voltage at the input of the module. To further minimize ripple voltage at the input, very low ESR ceramic capacitors are recommended at the input of the module. Figure 26 shows input ripple voltage (mVpp) for various outputs with 6x47 F tantalum capacitors and with 6x22 F ceramic capacitor (TDK part #: C4532X5R1C226M) at full load. However, additional output filtering may be required by the system designer for a number of reasons. First, there may be a need to further reduce the output ripple and noise of the module. Second, the dynamic response characteristics may need to be customized to a particular load step change. To reduce the output ripple and improve the dynamic response to a step load change, additional capacitance at the output can be used. Low ESR polymer and ceramic capacitors are recommended to improve the dynamic response of the module. For stable operation of the module, limit the capacitance to less than the maximum output capacitance as specified in the electrical specification table. To perform specific stability and transient response analysis, use Tyco Power's Stability Analysis Tool (SAT) available at power.tycoelectronics.com. Please contact your local Tyco Power application engineer for availability of characteristic model of these Austin SuperLynx modules. Tyco Electronics Power Systems Safety Considerations For safety agency approval the power module must be installed in compliance with the spacing and separation requirements of the end-use safety agency standards, i.e., UL 60950-1, CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1-03, and VDE 0850:2001-12 (EN60950-1) Licensed. For the converter output to be considered meeting the requirements of safety extra-low voltage (SELV), the input must meet SELV requirements. The power module has extra-low voltage (ELV) outputs when all inputs are ELV. The input to these units is to be provided with a fastacting fuse with a maximum rating of 6A in the positive input lead. 11 Austin SuperLynxTM II 12V SIP Non-isolated Power Modules: 8.3 - 14Vdc input; 0.75Vdc to 5.5Vdc Output;16A output current Data Sheet March 14, 2006 Feature Description VIN+ Remote On/Off TM Austin SuperLynx II 12V SIP power modules feature an On/Off pin for remote On/Off operation. Two On/Off TM logic options are available in the Austin SuperLynx II series modules. Positive Logic On/Off signal, device code suffix "4", turns the module ON during a logic High on the On/Off pin and turns the module OFF during a logic Low. Negative logic On/Off signal, no device code suffix, turns the module OFF during logic High and turns the module ON during logic Low. For positive logic modules, the circuit configuration for using the On/Off pin is shown in Figure 27. The On/Off pin is an open collector/drain logic input signal (Von/Off) that is referenced to ground. During a logic-high (On/Off pin is pulled high internal to the module) when the transistor Q1 is in the Off state, the power module is ON. Maximum allowable leakage current of the transistor when Von/off = VIN,max is 10A. Applying a logic-low when the transistor Q1 is turned-On, the power module is OFF. During this state VOn/Off must be less than 0.3V. When not using positive logic On/off pin, leave the pin unconnected or tie to VIN. Overcurrent Protection To provide protection in a fault (output overload) condition, the unit is equipped with internal current-limiting circuitry and can endure current limiting continuously. At the point of current-limit inception, the unit enters hiccup mode. The unit operates normally once the output current is brought back into its specified range. The typical average output current during hiccup is 3A. Input Undervoltage Lockout At input voltages below the input undervoltage lockout limit, module operation is disabled. The module will begin to operate at an input voltage above the undervoltage lockout turn-on threshold. Q2 R3 Q3 CSS R4 GND MODULE Rpull-up _ Overtemperature Protection To provide protection in a fault condition, the unit is equipped with a thermal shutdown circuit. The unit will shutdown if the thermal reference point Tref, exceeds o 125 C (typical), but the thermal shutdown is not intended as a guarantee that the unit will survive temperatures beyond its rating. For negative logic On/Off devices, the circuit configuration is shown is Figure 29. The On/Off pin is pulled high with an external pull-up resistor (typical Rpullup = 68k, +/- 5%). When transistor Q1 is in the Off state, logic High is applied to the On/Off pin and the power module is Off. The minimum On/off voltage for logic High on the On/Off pin is 2.5 Vdc. To turn the module ON, logic Low is applied to the On/Off pin by turning ON Q1. When not using the negative logic On/Off, leave the pin unconnected or tie to GND. Without an external resistor between the Trim and GND pins, the output of the module will be 0.7525Vdc. To calculate the value of the trim resistor, Rtrim for a desired output voltage, use the following equation: By using 1% tolerance trim resistor, set point tolerance of 2% is achieved as specified in the electrical specification. The Lynx Programming Tool, available at power.tycoelectronics.com under the Design Tools section, helps determine the required external trim resistor needed for a specific output voltage. Rtrim is the external resistor in The amount of power delivered by the module is defined as the voltage at the output terminals multiplied by the output current. When using the trim feature, the output voltage of the module can be increased, which at the same output current would increase the power output of the module. Care should be taken to ensure that the maximum output power of the module remains at or below the maximum rated power (Pmax = Vo,set x Io,max). Vo is the desired output voltage Voltage Margining For example, to program the output voltage of the Austin TM SuperLynx II module to 1.8V, Rtrim is calculated as follows: Output voltage margining can be implemented in the Austin SuperLynxTM II modules by connecting a resistor, Rmargin-up, from the Trim pin to the ground pin for margining-up the output voltage and by connecting a resistor, Rmargin-down, from the Trim pin to the Output pin for margining-down. Figure 30 shows the circuit configuration for output voltage margining. The Lynx Programming Tool, available at power.tycoelectronics.com under the Design Tools section, also calculates the values of Rmargin-up and Rmargin-down for a specific output voltage and % margin. This is accomplished via an additional sequencing pin. When not using the sequencing feature, either tie the SEQ pin to VIN or leave it unconnected. When an analog voltage is applied to the SEQ pin, the output voltage tracks this voltage until the output reaches the set-point voltage. The SEQ voltage must be set higher than the set-point voltage of the module. The output voltage follows the voltage on the SEQ pin on a one-to-one volt basis. By connecting multiple modules together, customers can get multiple modules to track their output voltages to the voltage applied on the SEQ pin. For proper voltage sequencing, first, input voltage is applied to the module. The On/Off pin of the module is left unconnected (or tied to GND for negative logic modules or tied to VIN for positive logic modules) so that the module is ON by default. After applying input voltage to the module, a minimum of 10msec delay is required before applying voltage on the SEQ pin. During this time, potential of 50mV ( 10 mV) is maintained on the SEQ pin. After 10msec delay, an analog voltage is applied to the SEQ pin and the output voltage of the module will track this voltage on a one-to-one volt bases until output reaches the set-point voltage. To initiate simultaneous shutdown of the modules, the SEQ pin voltage is lowered in a controlled manner. Output voltage of the modules tracks the voltages below their set-point voltages on a one-to-one basis. A valid input voltage must be maintained until the tracking and output voltages reach ground potential to ensure a controlled shutdown of the modules. Remote Sense TM The Austin SuperLynx II 12V SIP power modules have a Remote Sense feature to minimize the effects of distribution losses by regulating the voltage at the Remote Sense pin (See Figure 31). The voltage between the Sense pin and Vo pin must not exceed 0.5V. The amount of power delivered by the module is defined as the output voltage multiplied by the output current (Vo x Io). When using Remote Sense, the output voltage of the module can increase, which if the same output is maintained, increases the power output by the module. Make sure that the maximum output power of the module remains at or below the maximum rated power. When the Remote Sense feature is not being used, connect the Remote Sense pin to output pin of the module. When using the EZ-SEQUENCETM feature to control start-up of the module, pre-bias immunity feature during start-up is disabled. The pre-bias immunity feature of the module relies on the module being in the diodemode during start-up. When using the EZSEQUENCETM feature, modules goes through an internal set-up time of 10msec, and will be in synchronous rectification mode when voltage at the SEQ pin is applied. This will result in sinking current in the module if pre-bias voltage is present at the output of the module. When pre-bias immunity during start-up is required, the EZ-SEQUENCETM feature must be disabled. Considerations include ambient temperature, airflow, module power dissipation, and the need for increased reliability. A reduction in the operating temperature of the module will result in an increase in reliability. The thermal data presented here is based on physical measurements taken in a wind tunnel. The test set-up is shown in Figure 33. Note that the airflow is parallel to the long axis of the module as shown in figure 32. For reliable operation this temperature o should not exceed 125 C. The output power of the module should not exceed the rated power of the module (Vo,set x Io,max). Tyco Electronics Power Systems Heat Transfer via Convection Increased airflow over the module enhances the heat transfer via convection. The result of inadequate cleaning and drying can affect both the reliability of a power module and the testability of the finished circuit-board assembly. For guidance on appropriate soldering, cleaning and drying procedures, refer to Tyco Electronics Board Mounted Power Modules: Soldering and Cleaning Application Note. Through-Hole Lead-Free Soldering Information The RoHS-compliant through-hole products use the SAC (Sn/Ag/Cu) Pb-free solder and RoHS-compliant components. They are designed to be processed through single or dual wave soldering machines. The pins have an RoHS-compliant finish that is compatible with both Pb and Pb-free wave soldering processes. A maximum preheat rate of 3C/s is suggested. The wave preheat process should be such that the temperature of the power module board is kept below 210C. For Pb solder, the recommended pot temperature is 260C, while the Pb-free solder pot is 270C max. Not all RoHS-compliant through-hole products can be processed with paste-through-hole Pb or Pb-free reflow process.
