Speed Grades
When making a dev ice selection in the implementation tools, al ways select a speed g rade t hat
corresponds to the specific target device . In other words, a “-4” speed grade is still a “-4”
regardless of whether it is a Commerc ial, Industr ial, or Military grade part.
The AC characteristics and guaranteed timing specifications for a given device are specified
per a specific speed grade. However, these parameters do not vary per product grade (i.e.,
Comme rcial, Industrial, Militar y, or o ther). Therefo re, a Commercial grade device (C) of a
particul ar spee d grade will have identical guaranteed wors t case timing spec if icati ons as the
Industrial or Militar y version (I, M, B, or N) of the same part and same spee d gra de. Howeve r,
this is not the c ase for be st case or minimum delay timing specifications.
Xilinx de vices are assigned a speed grade based on the whether or not the device can pass all
the guaranteed worst case timing (maximum delays) for that speed grade. A dev ice that does
not pass all A C parametric tests f or t he fastest s peed grade classification ma y test successfully
for a slower speed grade classification and subsequently be assigned that gr ade. Theref ore, a
faster dev ice m ay be cate gori zed to a slower speed grade as long as there aren’t an y
associated guaranteed minimum timing delay specifications, or the part successfully meets
such specifications.
Industrial and Military grade devices are tested at a greater junction temperature range than
Commercial grade devices. The commercial range for junction temperature is 0°C to +85°C.
The industrial temperature range –40°C to +100°C , and the military range is –55°C to +125°C.
The military version of a specific device must meet the same timing specifications at +125°C as
the corresponding commercial version at +85°C (for a specific speed grade). For exam pl e, a
device that meets all timing specifications f or a -6 speed grade at +85°C may only meet the
timing specification s for a -4 speed gra de w hen tested at +12 5°C. Theref ore, the commercial
grade devices will typically have an extended speed grade offering over the availability of
devices tested at extended temperature ranges.
Core and IP Support
Cores and IP modules de veloped for Commercial grade Xilinx devices may also be
implem ent ed in Ind us tr ial and M ilit ary grade as well as Radia tio n Ha rdened devices. Dev ice
architectures do va ry across product grades. However, some c ores may have been
character ized for speed grades that are unavailable in the extende d tempera ture ranges.
Additionally, some cores, such as the Xilinx PCI Core Solution, have been characterized for
required minimum timing specifications. In such a case i f the Core or IP mod ule has not been
specifically characterized f or the ext ended temperature range then it may not be guaranteed to
operate over the full t em perature range of the devi ce. However, such a core would operate
successfully within the temperature ra nge for which it was characterized.
