Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) - MW Series Features Nanovation's MW series of EDFA products is designed for applications in advanced dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems where high per formance and reliability are critical. They are available in Booster, Inline and Preamplifier configurations to cover a wide range of applications in the full C-Band. A sophisticated micro-controller monitors and controls the internal components, while the incorporated RS-232 interface permits the user to remotely control the device or monitor the internal fault alarms. These devices can be programmed to operate in either the constant gain or constant power mode. The integrated control system assures that adding or dropping wavelengths in state-of-the-ar t DWDM systems is accomplished with minimum system disturbance. * Excellent gain flatness over the full C-Band * High saturated output power * Low noise figure * Internal microcontroller for monitoring, alarm and control functions * AGC, APC or ACC operation mode with AGC as default * Input and output optical isolation and power monitoring * TTL compatible alarm and warning capability * Low power consumption, single 5V power supply operation * RS-232 serial interface for system integration and diagnostics * Wide operating temperature and humidity ranges * Compact packaging * Bellcore GR-1312-CORE qualified and ISO 9001 certified Applications * High performance Full C-Band DWDM systems * Booster, inline or preamplifier configurations Product Description General The MW series of EDFA products has been specially designed for use in DWDM transmission systems as a booster, inline, or preamplifier. A sophisticated internal electronic control system maintains the performance of the module, provides monitoring information, enables the module to be set to specific operational states, and incorporates a series of alarm signals associated with a range of potential system faults. Each module can operate under independent control in combinations of constant output power or constant gain control with fast transient suppression. This function is provided by the microcontroller that monitors the input power and drives the pump lasers under closed-loop feedback control. These features permit wavelengths to be rapidly added or dropped from the amplifier while controlling the impact on the remaining channels. Optical The amplifiers have been optimized for the full C-Band (1530 to 1562 nm) gain-bandwidth DWDM operations by careful selection of both passive and active components. All amplifiers are pumped with high reliability pumps, and are provided with optical monitor outputs to allow customer spectral analysis or monitoring of the amplified signal. An optical output monitor port is a customer option that can assist the user in such analysis or monitoring. V011 Operation mode AGC (Automatic Gain Control) - default APC (Automatic Power Control) - optional ACC (Automatic Current Control) - for performance monitoring Electrical Electrical connection is through a standard male DB25 connector. Control System Internal electronic circuits provide the pump lasers with electrical transient protected power supply and temperature control. A microcontroller monitors and controls the module and provides an external RS232 serial interface, through which operation mode and other configurations can be customized. A series of digital outputs provides a set of alarms that indicate a range of module and system faults. Package The units are housed within very small modules with input and output connections through single mode fiber pigtails and are fitted as standard with super-polished FC/UPC or FC/APC connectors. Other types of connectors are available on request. 1- Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) - MW Series Absolute Maximum Ratings (in accordance with Bellcore GR-1312-CORE) Parameter Min. Typical Max. Either mode can be set via the RS-232 interface. In addition, automatic power control (APC) can be provided as a customer optional mode. The factory default mode is AGC and it is stored in the microcontroller's permanent memory. The ACC mode is enabled during production to test the EDFA parameters. AGC - Operating Conditions (Normal Mode) 1. EDFA receives "switch on pump laser" command (Adis) 2. The output return loss must be lower than the output return loss threshold The operating current of pump laser 1 (or pump laser 1 and pump laser 2) is adjusted automatically to keep the gain constant over a wide range of optical input. Changes in the output power correspond to changes in input power while the gain is held constant. 1. If the input signal is above the AGC maximum limit, the pump laser will operate at its maximum current in the range of 180 to 250 mA 2. If the input signal is below the AGC input threshold level, the pump laser will operate at its minimum current in the range of 30 to 50 mA 3. If there is no input signal, the pump laser will operate at its minimum current and the corresponding output ASE will be in the range of +3 to +5 dBm ACC - Operating Conditions (Factory Mode) 1. EDFA receives the "switch on the pump laser" command (Adis) 2. The output return loss must be lower than the output return loss threshold Pump laser 1 (or pump laser 1 and pump laser 2) operates at the maximum working current whether or not an input signal is present. If the input signal is present, the EDFA produces the maximum gain. If the input signal is absent, the output level produced by ASE (amplified spontaneous emission) is about +10 dBm. Please read carefully the following safety information prior to handling and installing. The signal output of the pump laser and EDFA is invisible, yet it can be of high power level and therefore can cause damage to the eyes or skin. Please do not look at the fiber cross section directly without protection devices. There are precision optical devices inside the EDFA; therefore extreme care should be taken not to impose excess vibration or shaking. Care should also be taken in handling the pigtail fibers since they are easily broken. There are static sensitive devices inside the EDFA, please make sure proper grounding and electrical power connection. 1-24 Do not attempt to open the EDFA by any unauthorized personnel. Please contact Nanovation technical support for assistance. V011
