A choice of industry standard
serial interfaces — two-wire,
SMBus, SPI, USB, ISO 7816 —

AUTHENTICATION/ACCESS CONTROL
Atmel ICs ensure that equipment and
replacement parts are authentic or that
only the proper people are granted
access to a facility. These devices have
many uses. Campus cards that give
students access to college resources and
loyalty cards that build up consumer
profiles and offer discounts are two
examples.
For part authentication, the devices
correctly match the elements of a system
and give configuration details. Many
transportation applications are great
time-savers: smart tickets for rapid access
to public transport, RF tags in vehicles
for collecting road tolls without stopping
the vehicle, and baggage ID tags to make
sure that bags stay with passengers on
airline flights.
The next step in access control
undoubtedly involves biometrics. Atmel
is working with leaders in image
processing to develop single-chip
solutions based on fingerprint or iris
recognition.
Atmel’s AT88SC family of secure serial
EEPROMs and the AT88RF series of
contactless RFID transponders are ideal
for these applications. Devices can have
a unique ID and transport code.

When electronic data is valuable, it must be
protected during transmission and in
storage. Atmel Secure ICs provide the right
access drawbridge and storage fortress for
digital TV set-top boxes, Web encryption,
postal meters, driver’s licenses and
health/insurance cards. In these applications,
data is encrypted for storage or transmission
and only decrypted at the final point of use.
Streaming data through Atmel’s standard SPI
or USB interfaces allows encryption at the
highest possible through-puts entirely
on-chip. The encryption
algorithms are chosen to
give an appropriate level
of security for the
application.
If an algorithm is
compromised, it can be
replaced by another with higher security –
without replacing the IC. That’s one of the
benefits of Flash program memory. Another
benefit is the physical security of Flash: you
can’t see its contents, and it’s almost
impossible to probe internally.
ENCRYPTED DIGITAL TV RECEPTION/DECRYPTION
Atmel’s four families of secure microcontrollers are targeted at these
data security applications: the industry-standard M68HC05®-based
AT05SC family (new) and MCS-51®-based AT89SC family, the
proprietary RISC AVR®-based AT90SC family or the high-
performance 32-bit ARM7-based AT91SP family. Each is
supplied with a complete set of application development tools.
Atmel has also developed a security processor that significantly
increases the security of Web access, file transfers and e-mail. Now
shipping in many PCs, this IC is the basis of support for TCPA
(Trusted Client Platform Alliance). This group of PC manufacturers,
software vendors, IC suppliers and users is defining a standard for
client hardware security in personal computers, PDAs and Web-
enabled cell phones and pagers.
FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS
Handling electronic data representing money requires the highest
levels of security. Atmel’s high-security microcontroller-based
products (the AT90SC and AT91SC families) are
more than a match for this challenge.
Emerging applications for these devices
include multi-purpose bank cards,
electronic purse, and the most rapidly
growing application of all –
Web commerce. New-generation
Web terminals will almost
certainly include a reader for
a user ID module.

Running independently of the MCU, the co-processor provides
extremely fast encryption and decryption and maximum security. To
ensure cryptographic level security the random word generator on

Atmel’s AT91SC secure microcontroller offers the fastest performance in
a multi-application Security IC on the market today.
Based on the industry-leading 32-bit ARM7 core, the AT91SC fea-
tures both an SPI and a USB high-speed serial interface. A system
management bus provides an interface for motherboard applications.
Smartcard applications are enabled via a standard ISO7816 interface.
And, because of its on-chip DES, DSA and RSA encryption/decryption
capability the secret key never leaves the IC.
The AT91SC security product includes the industry’s highest levels of
security technology. In addition to standard tamper detection circuits, it
incorporates methods to prevent DPA, timing, and other non-invasive
attacks as well as top-layer metal plates to prevent micro-probing.
Its security is strong enough to be accepted for use by the U.S.
Government.
