3Com®11 Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card
with XJACK®Antenna
The Simple,
Reliable Way
to Network—
Without Wires
It’s an information-driven world.
Whether youre at work, home, school,
or on the road, you need constant
connectivity in order to make better
decisions and gain access to the infor-
mation you need. That’s why more
people are turning to notebook PCs for
the freedom to work, learn, and play
anywhere and anytime.
Going online with a mobile PC used to
mean you were constantly dealing
with wiring constraints and configu-
ration hassles. Not anymore. The
3Com®11 Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card
with XJACK®antenna lets you take
your notebook anywhere, and connect
instantly and securely to any Wi-Fi
certified device or network. You get
“wired-like” performance wherever
and whenever you need it, without
wires or configuration hassles.
Key Benefits
Great Performance
3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN
PC Cards send and receive informa-
tion wirelessly over a range of 100 m
(328 ft)* from access points, at speeds
up to 11 Mbps. That’s more than
five times the performance of
previous-generation wireless LANs
and roughly equivalent to standard
wired Ethernet LANs.
Simple To Use
3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN PC
Cards are designed for effortless
usability. The Auto Network Connect
feature allows the PC Card to find and
connect to a nearby access point
automatically upon startup, and stay
connected as you roam among access
points—even across router bound-
aries. Theres no need to manually
configure a network connection. Just
start up and go.
This wireless LAN PC Card is so
powerful and simple to use, it even
lets users share information when
theres no network present. With the
ad hoc networking feature, two or
more wireless PC Cards can communi-
cate with each other without using a
network access point. At the click of
a button, you can quickly and easily
establish a temporary network at a
conference center, in a hotel room,
or on a job site.
Reliable
3Com’s unique XJACK antenna
extends for clear, interference-free
reception, then retracts within the
PC Card for safety and convenience
while in transit. Theres nothing extra
to carry, lose, or break.
On startup, the PC Card scans the
environment and picks the best
available access point. Dynamic rate
*100 m (328 ft) range depends on physical conditions and other electronic devices in the area.
Requires the 3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Access Point 6000.
3COM®11 MBPS WIRELESS LAN PC CARD WITH XJACK®ANTENNA
Reliable network
connections no
matter what
physical conditions
or usage patterns
are encountered
shifting enables the PC Card to
automatically choose the best
connection speed (11, 5.5, 2, or
1Mbps) based on signal strength and
distance from the access point. This
provides the fastest possible connec-
tion rate and ensures connectivity even
at long range or in noisy environments.
Seamless roaming from access point to
access point guarantees a continuous
connection as you move throughout
the building. Together, these features
ensure reliable network connections no
matter what physical conditions or
usage patterns are encountered.
Secure
People who are considering wireless
networks often wonder about secu-
rity. The 3Com 11 Mbps Wireless
LAN PC Card supports both 40-bit
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
encryption and 128-bit encryption
(where allowed by law).
If you use this PC Card with the
3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Access
Point 6000, you can take advantage of
our advanced Dynamic Security Link
technology. Unlike shared key
schemes, this technology automati-
cally generates a new 128-bit
encryption key for each session—
providing a much higher level of
security and freeing the user from the
inconvenience of entering keys manu-
ally. And for additional security, you
can implement user authentication,
requiring all users to log in with a
name and password at each session.
Compatible
The 3Com 11 Mbps Wireless LAN
PC Card is Wi-Fi certified, so you can
use it with any vendor’s Wi-Fi certi-
fied network or device—at the office,
in public areas, or even on your wire-
less home network. You can purchase
Wi-Fi certified products with confi-
dence that they’ll interoperate with
any vendor’s Wi-Fi certified products,
now and in the future. There’s no
need to worry about being locked
into a single-vendor solution. And
the Wi-Fi specification helps promote
standardization within the wireless
LAN market, yielding a greater
selection of products at lower prices.

Product Features
and Benefits
Feature Benefit
Performance
High-performance connections Notebook users can connect to the network
wirelessly at speeds up to 11 Mbps at distances of
100 m (328 ft).
Power-saving mode with auto detect The PC Card automatically selects the appropriate
power mode based on whether an AC connection is
present. While the notebook is plugged into an
AC power outlet, the PC Card runs in Continuous
Aware Mode, receiving packets as soon as they are
transmitted. While running on battery power, the
PC Card switches to Power Save Polling Mode, which
saves power by waking the wireless transceiver
periodically to receive packets buffered in the access
point. The user can also override the auto detect
feature and choose the desired mode manually.
Reliability
XJACK antenna 3Com’s unique XJACK antenna extends to provide
excellent reception anywhere you need it, then
retracts within the notebook so you can travel
conveniently without worrying about breakage.
Dynamic rate shifting Based on signal strength and distance from the
access point, connection speeds dynamically shift
between 11, 5.5, 2, and 1 Mbps to guarantee
connectivity at the fastest possible rate, even at
long range or in noisy environments.
Simplicity
Auto Network ConnectGet constant network connectivity. If you roam
into an area where the IP (network) address is no
longer valid, a new one is assigned automatically.
That means you can roam seamlessly across router
boundaries without ever reconfiguring the
networking address manually. And you never
have to configure or manually assign the wireless
network name (ESSID).
Ad hoc networking This PC Card enables networking in peer-to-peer
sessions at the click of a button. In this mode, two
or more PC Cards can be networked together
without requiring an access point. You can quickly
and easily establish temporary networks at
conference centers, in hotel rooms, or on job sites.
Security
Encryption—40-bit WEP Wireless clients have the option to use 40-bit WEP
encryption, which interoperates with other Wi-Fi
certified products.
Dynamic Security LinkUsing 128-bit session key encryption(where
allowed by law), a unique security key is automati-
cally negotiated between the access point and
wireless PC Cards for each session. You get virtually
unbreakable security without ever entering a
key manually.
Compatibility
Wi-Fi certified Wi-Fi certification ensures interoperability with
Wi-Fi certified products from other vendors—
which means compatibility with the widest range
of wireless networking products available today
and in future years.
