How Intel®wireless networking
can help your business grow
An Intel®wireless local area network (WLAN) uses radio waves instead of cables
to transfer data between access points attached to your wired network and wireless
adapters attached to PCs.
Our WLANs are ideal when you want to extend your existing wired network or create
a new network, including temporar y sites where wired network setup is difficult. In
addition to reducing the cost, clutter, and hassle of network connector cables, they offer
other important advantages over wired networks.
Intel®WLANs let you:
Become more productive by giving you continuous, wireless access to your
network, e-mail, and the Internet as you move through the workplace.
Expand your network just by adding more access points or adapters.
Protect your data transmissions with industry-standard security measures that help
prevent unauthorized access.
Simplify network management by using Intel®PROSet software for setup in
minutes, automatic wired-to-wireless switching, and easy peer-to-peer networking.
Link multiple buildings in a campus environment without expensive leased lines.
In short, Intel WLAN products let you do more in less time at lower cost.
Because you need a vendor you
can count on. Our track record of reli-
ability , our expertise in mobile computing,
and our decades of experience helping
customers adopt new technologies
make us the logical choice when you
need a WLAN. And we back our WLAN
products with strong warranties, global
distribution, and free customer support
services. Just like when you went
to 10/100 or Gigabit Ethernet network
technology, you can count on Intel to
make your move to wireless networking
successful.
Because of our commitment
to wireless technology. Our invest-
ment in wireless technology demonstrates
this commitment. Our research and
development efforts, for example, span
WLAN with 802.11a and 802.11b prod-
ucts and Wireless Wide Area Networking
(WWAN) with GSM and GPRS products.
Because we help set wireless
industry standards. Intel®co-devel-
oped the Ethernet specification. As an
active member in key industry groups,
we also help develop the standards for
wireless networking. We build all Intel®
WLAN products to those standards.
Because we have the solutions
you need. We are the first company
to offer a complete family of 802.11a
wireless Ethernet products. Our wide
selection of 802.11a and 802.11b WLAN
products gives you more choices, so you
can create the type of WLAN that’s right
for you.

5000 LAN Series
What type of WLAN is right for you?
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) sets the standards for WLAN
products. Intel®offers products that comply with the IEEE 802.11a or 802.11b WLAN
standards.
The type of Intel WLAN you should choose depends on how you will use it. We offer a
variety of products so you can tailor your WLAN to f it your needs.
IEEE 802.11a WLAN
Our Intel®PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN products for 802.11a WLANs include access points,
CardBus adapters for notebook PCs, PCI adapters for desktop PCs, and mini-PCI for
integrated solutions.
These 802.11a products are up to five times faster (54 Mbps) than previous WLAN
products. They use the "clean" 5 GHz UNII spectrum—free from interference by
cordless phones, microwaves, Bluetooth*, Home RF, garage door openers, 802.11b
WLANs, and other devices that use the 2.4 GHz ISM spectr um.
You can have up to eight Intel®PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Access Points in the same
location to increase your total available bandwidth to 432 Mbps in a given area—thir teen
times the bandwidth of 802.11b WLANs.
You should consider an 802.11a WLAN when:
You want to lower costs through higher system performance.
You need the bandwidth and speed to handle large graphics, audio, data, and
video files.
You need greater network capacity than an 802.11b WLAN can give you.
You want the speed of your WLAN to compare to the speed of wired networks.
You will have many users per access point.
You want to replace or extend your wired network with a wireless one,
or create a new network in a hard-to-wire space.
You want to run both 802.11a and 802.11b WLANs in the same area at the same time.

You can connect 802.11a and 802.11b products to the same wired network backbone. Since the two standards use different
frequencies, you can put their access points near each other without cross-interference.
** Our 802.11a access point is field upgradeable by a technician to simultaneous 802.11b compliance with optional upgrade kit.
For greater convenience, we also offer a dual 802.11a/802.11b access point.
An Intel®wireless local area network (WLAN) uses radio waves instead of cables to transfer data between access points attached to your
wi red network and wireless adapters attached to PCs. This reduces the cost of network setup and maintenance and lets you stay connected
to network resources, e-mail, and the Inter net as you move through the workplace.
IEEE 802.11b WLAN
Our 802.11b WLAN products include access points, adapters for notebook PCs,
USB and PCI devices for desktop PCs, wireless gateways, mini-PCI for integrated
solutions, and modules for handheld PCs.
The Wireless Ether net Compatibility Association (WECA) has cer tified that Intel
802.11b products can work with any other Wi-Fi* (IEEE 802.11b) products,
regardless of vendor.
You can use them for home networks and in organizations of any size. They
operate on the 2.4 GHz ISM spectrum, available worldwide.
You should consider an 802.11b WLAN when:
Initial system cost is your main concern.
Data rates up to 11 Mbps are sufficient.
Your goal is global implementation.
You want to expand an existing 802.11b WLAN.
You need WLAN access for handheld PCs.
You will have a small number of users per access point.
You only want to add limited pockets of WLAN—for specific
workgroups or areas, for example—to your existing wired LAN.
