Product Bulletin 1700 Series Pumps 980 nm, Low Power Consumption Pump Modules for Next Generation EDFA Designs The JDS Uniphase 1700 Series embraces an elegant solution to one of the biggest concerns of EDFA designers, "heat dissipation". These highly efficient pump modules consume less than one half of the electrical power than other 980 nm pump modules at the same optical power levels. The 1700 Series are used in a variety of applications where heat dissipation is a concern. These applications include: wideband erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) in dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) fiber optic networks and narrow band erbium doped fiber amplets. Incorporated into these pump modules is our cutting-edge 6540 laser diodes, which possess superior reliability and thermal performance. These laser modules are stabilized with fiber Bragg grating to enhance the performance of EDFA. Avoid looking directly into the fiber when the device is in operation. Because of the small size of these devices, each of the labels shown is attached to the individual shipping container. They are illustrated here to comply with 21 CFR 1040.10 as applicable under the radiations control for health and safety act of 1968. SERIAL NUMBER IDENTIFICATION LABEL CAUTION: THE USE OF OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS WITH THIS PRODUCT WILL INCREASE EYE HAZARD. Operating the laser diode outside of its maximum ratings may cause device failure or a safety hazard. Power supplies used with the component must be employed such that the maximum peak optical power cannot be exceeded. CW laser diodes may be damaged by excessive drive current or switching transients. When using power supplies, the laser diode should be connected with the main power on and the output voltage at zero. The current should be increased slowly while monitoring the laser diode output power and the drive current. Careful attention to heatsinking and proper mounting of this device is required to insure specified performance over its operating life. To maximize thermal transfer to the heatsink, the heatsink mounting surface must be flat to within .001" and the mounting screws must be torqued down to 1.5 in.-lb.
