Installation details
All Schaffner feedthrough capacitors and
filters described in this catalog are
designed for through-bulkhead mounting.
For optimum EMI performance, especially
at frequencies above a few MHz, it is
important to achieve a low impedance
path between the mounting flange of the
capacitor or filter and the equipment case.
Poor earth bonding will reduce insertion
loss and could compromise safety.
It is recommended that feedthrough
components are mounted on an aluminum
surface or on a steel surface which has
been electroplated with tin or zinc. The
surface should be unpainted, and must be
flat and smooth. In most cases,
‘conductive paint’ finishes are
unacceptable, because they do not permit
an adequate earth bond.
While other materials and finishes may be
acceptable, users should consider their
effect on shielding, as well as possible
galvanic corrosion; this can occur
whenever dissimilar metals are in contact
in the presence of moisture. Under these
conditions, the two metals effectively
become a battery with the moisture
forming the electrolyte, and as shown in
Table 1, the effect becomes more
pronounced when the metals have a large
electropotential difference. All Schaffner
feedthrough capacitors and filters have
nickel plated brass cases to provide good
electrical contact.
Einbauanweisungen
Tableau 1). Les effets sont d’autant plus
importants que la différence de potentiel
électrochimique des métaux est élevée.
Tous les filtres et condensateurs de
traversée Schaffner sont logés dans des
boîtiers en laiton nickelé pour assurer un
contact électrique correct.

Corrosion due to electrochemical action between
dissimilar metals which are in contact is minimized if
the combined electrochemical potential is below
about 0.6V. This table lists the combined
electrochemical potentials for a number of pairs of
metals in common use; combinations above the
dividing line should be avoided.
