DESCRIPTION
The KMT36H is a magnetic field sensor utilizing the anisotropic m agneto resist ance effect. Therefore
the sensor is sens in g the m agnetic field direction rather than the magnetic field strength. T he s ens or
contains three W heats tone bridges rotate d by 120°. A rotati ng m agnetic fiel d (t ypical strength 25 kA/m
in the sens or pl ane) will result in thr e e s inuso id al o utpu t signa ls with a per iod of 18 0°, phase shifted by
60° field angle. By use of a modified atan algorithm the field angle can be calculated with high
accuracy.
As an u niq ue f eatur e, the K MT36H is able t o measure f ull 3 60° by utilizing an ad di t ion al magnetic fiel d
which is generated b y a planar coil that is integrated on the ch ip. T he 180°/3 60° d eterm ination is done
by a simple sign distinction and may be computed periodically or only once at power up.

1) Hysteresis and acc uracy are depending nearly i nvers el y proporti onal on the magnetic field strength. The accuracy is def i ned
as the max. angular difference between actual fiel d angle and measured angle calculated from the third and fifth harmonics
of the Fourier spectrum. The hysteresis is defined as angular di fference bet ween left and ri ght t urn.

SIGNAL EVALUATION
180° EVALUATION
As output vo ltages (V1, V2, V3) we us e the three poss ible diff erences betwe en the three sign al outputs
(see fig. 3). At first the true offsets must be subtracted from the raw signals. The field angle α in a
180°-range then can be calculated in the following manner:
Using the three possible combinations of output signals (m,n = 1,2 ; 2,3 ; 3,1) three results are
obtained, which can be averaged to increase accuracy. Comparing the three results gives additional
information about their reliability.
360° EVALUATION
In order to distinguish between α and α+180° two additional measurements are needed: one with
positive, the other with negative coil current. In the next step the change in the signals due to the
influenc e of the c oil curr ent m ust be calc ulated . The s ign of thes e coil -induce d out put voltag e chan ges
gives the 36-information by case differentiation (see figure 4). In principle, this 360° discrimination
needs to be computed only once at start up. Nevertheless, it is recommended to check the
measurement periodically.
